Vehicle recalls-ignore or take seriously?

If you receive a recall notice about your vehicle, you may be like other car owners in Kansas and throughout the country and ignore it. Manufacturers send out recall notices about safety concerns of a particular vehicle so the owners can fix the problem at no charge to them. Because recalls typically relate to safety issues, it is important to schedule an appointment for repair as soon as possible. Even if it seems like a small, non-safety related issue you should take care of it so it does not become a bigger problem later.

According to the Providence Journal, many vehicle owners ignore recall notices, which can put them in danger as well as others on the road. Some of the recalls that deserve immediate action due to the interference with safety include issues related to

  • Steering
  • Airbags
  • Suspension
  • Fuel system
  • Tires susceptible to cracking
  • Wiring system

Recalls of equipment that does not directly have to do with safety include air conditioning and the radio. However, the manufacturer lists local dealerships that will fix it at no charge to you, so it is worth scheduling a repair appointment even for non-safety recalls.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports you can go onto their website and enter your VIN if you are wondering if your vehicle is on any type of recall list. You can also report a safety complaint to NHTSA about your vehicle, which may lead to a safety investigation and subsequent recall if it receives multiple complaints about the same issue.
